Cattle Manager & Farm Hand Job Description
Reports To: Executive Director; daily and weekly check-in and reports

Works With: Executive Director, Farm Manager, farm hands, staff, volunteers and students

Hours of Work: This is a full time position requiring 40 or more hours per week. There is a seasonal nature to the position that will require some flexibility when work demands are at their peak (haying, birthing, poultry processing, events) in the summer and slower during the winter.

Skills: Basic carpentry, tractor work, mechanics, computer skills and basic finance as relates to budgets.

Cattle Manager & Farm Hand Job Description

Responsible for:

  • care and feeding of the TFI herd creation and implementation of breeding plan
  • maintenance of complete records including but not limited to: breeding history, health history and production, slaughter history for the individual and herd
  • creation and implementation of yearly budget and 2-3 year budget projection
  • design and implantation of grazing plan coordinating with the sheep manager
  • design and implementation of fly control
  • plan repair and maintenance of perimeter fence and gates coordinating with the sheep manager
  • timely ordering of feed and mineral
  • repair and maintenance of cattle equipment creation of cattle management calendar

Assist with other livestock as requested and/or needed - other jobs as may from time-to-time be assigned, or required, not limited to livestock

Essential farm staff duties and responsibilities:

  • Assisting in all day to day farm activities
  • Animal care (feeding, watering, birthing, moving fences and assisting with associated treatments)
  • Poultry (chicken and turkey) processing and clean up
  • Field work (mowing, haying, building fences and waterlines)
  • Occasional construction or repairs of new or existing farm buildings, structures and facilities
  • Assist fellow TFI staff, student groups, volunteers, and interns with farm related projects
  • Representing The Farm Institute at various events and farmers markets
  • Assembling meat orders for restaurants, the farmers market, stores and CSA shares
  • Maintaining inventory of frozen meat and its whereabouts
  • Collecting, cleaning and assisting with egg sales
  • Coordinating and collaborating with the Education Department to ensure that the farming operation and environment is responsive to the educational curriculum
  • Basic machinery maintenance
