The Farm Institute
May 3, 2007
Hi Friends, Here's the latest from Katama Farm! Our Amazing Staff!
I wanted to share with you some of the
amazing results our staff have been able to
achieve this past month. From the successes
of Read for Seeds to the development of our
new CSA, FARM Membership and Community
Garden
programs, The Farm staff have been simply
remarkable. Please see the links below for
more details on how we are growing the farm
for you and how you can partake in the
ongoing farm adventure.
FARM Institute Events
Please join us this weekend (May
5th and 6th) for two very special
events:
On May 5th (4pm - 6pm) come on down to Katama Farm to experience a blending of modern and traditional art! The FARM Institute is hosting a special reception of "Our Time at The FARM", a photography exhibit by MVRHS students. Also help lend a hand plowing the fields with the return of Liz Thompson and her oxen in our second annual Plow Day. > Exhibit Details > Teaser Slide Show Then, on May 6th (7pm) at The Capawock Theatre, join Slow Food and The Farm Institute for a special screening of "The Future of Our Food". This award winning documentary explores the truth behind genetically engineered foods. After the movie, Vineyard Resident Noli Hoye will speak about community, local food & Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) across the street at Che's Lounge. > Film Details > The Future of Food Poster But before the weekend comes around, grab your popcorn, sit back and preview this -- The FARM Institute's feature film, "Farm Matters". Thanks to local documentary film maker Matt Taylor and the rest of the farm critters, you can take a 12 minute glimpse of the world of The FARM Institute at Katama Farm. > See the Film Now Because Katama Farm is your farm I want to make sure you save these dates and help spread the word for our upcoming captivating events. From our annual fundraiser, Meals in The Meadow, our grand opening of our new seven-acre corn maze, to our two day music festival Cornapalooza, there is something going on for everyone. > Mark your calendar and Save the Date
Animal Update
For a quick animal update, so far the
birthing season at the farm has brought 24
baby lambs. They were in good hands with the
farm hands caring for them around the clock.
Special thanks to former farm intern Dave
Wessling who came by to give a few of the
sheep a haircut. (Lambs Photo Credit:

Our first baby goats of the season were born on Monday, April 30, 2007. They are beautiful little kids, and our spring mood here at Katama Farm continues to be hard workin' and joyous with the new life that arrives daily. Speaking of animals, we are proud to announce the farm's new Veterinarian, Dr. Connie Breese. Dr. Breese is sharing her expertise to help us develop a livestock and public safety program.
Read for Seeds Supports MV
The FARM fights island hunger one potato at a
time! The FARM Institute's objectives of
raising awareness of food and hunger issues
was best exemplified in our latest Island
wide initiative -- "Read for Seeds" as over a
hundred children came to plant potatoes. A
portion of the potatoes will be donated to a
local food pantry this fall. Please read
last week's article from the
Martha's Vineyard
Gazette about this highly
valued experience.
Community-Supported Agriculture
Got Fresh Food? You want some? The Farm
Institute is now offering monthly shares of
seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs through
our new Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) program. The aim of CSA is to build a
healthy community
by providing a local, organic food supply and
re-establishing a relationship between the
community and the farmer. It is a
partnership and at its core is mutual
commitment: the farm feeds the people; the
people support the farm and share in the
inherent risks and potential bounty. This
relationship increases community involvement
in food production and in the health of the
local economy and environment. Find out how you
and your family can increase your consumption of
local delicious food. > Download our CSA Flyer [PDF]
Join the Farm!
Join our newly formed FARM Institute
Membership program. By becoming
a member, you will help The FARM Institute
fulfill its educational mission, preserve a
piece of the Island for generations to come
and help sow seeds in fertile soils and eager
minds. > See the Benefits of a
