The FARM Institute
April 23, 2009
Dear Friends of The FARM,

The FARM Institute is excited and proud to announce that beginning in September 2009 we will be offering extended stay field trips for off-island school children ranging from two to four days. We have been fortunate in establishing a partnership with the West Tisbury Youth Hostel where school groups will be spending the nights.

We  need your help in getting us connected and spreading the word to schools throughout the region....

The target population for the Residential FARM Program is students between ages 10 and 18 years old from both public and private schools who have limited opportunity for outdoor exploration and working and learning on a farm. Upon completion of the Residential Program students will leave with an increased understanding of, and experiences in, cooperation, teamwork, respect for the environment and our community, farming, land preservation, nutritional awareness, food cultivation, and the culture and history of agricultural traditions.

If your school or child's class might be interested in this program or you know of other schools that could benefit from this please contact Executive Director Matthew Goldfarb by phone or email: 508.627.7007 ext.102, matthew@farminstitute.org. Matthew has been in contact with school principals, administrators and teachers and could use your help in making introductions and opening doors with schools who would find our programs supportive of their goals and objectives.

The residential program is an investment in the next generation of leaders, land stewards, and active citizens. Children from the most urban of backgrounds can arrive at The FARM Institute without ever having spent time on a working farm and leave with an experience that can positively shape their lives forever. When children gain a new awareness of the natural world and the cycles of food production, they come to understand the importance of food and the importance of caring for the land. It is our goal through our education programs to provide our students with an experience that includes learning, farm work and fun.

More about the residential program...
In an urban environment children have limited access to exploration in the outdoors; it is far less likely that they have the opportunity to dig in the soil, tend to a garden or work together on a farm. The best way to address this is by directly engaging children in a working farm. Through educating each generation of children, we greatly increase the chances of instilling positive behavior in choices regarding responsibility, nutrition and environmental ethics. Our programs enable children to revisit our shared agricultural heritage and prepare them to become the next stewards of the land and their communities who will be more likely to preserve and promote what they have grown to understand.

The FARM Institute positively shapes the lives of students and community through our programs. Please help us spread the word about our Residential FARM Program by forwarding this email to friends, family and teachers.

We hope to see you and your family down on The FARM.
