The FARM Institute Hires New Manager

(Edgartown, Mass…June 20, 2005) – The FARM Institute at Katama Farm in Edgartown announces the arrival of new Farm Manager, Matthew Goldfarb. Matthew comes to Martha’s Vineyard from Scattergood Friends School in West Branch, Iowa where he served as Livestock Manager as well as a High School Biology Teacher. Matthew’s skills, experience and personal goals are a perfect match to the mission at The FARM Institute: Reconnecting children and the community with the culture of agriculture. His role will be to lead the farm into another exciting phase of growth and relevance in the island community.

For more than a decade Matthew has been farming, gardening, teaching and volunteering. His skill and knowledge comes directly out of his commitment to work, education, exploration, empowerment and community involvement through agriculture. His introduction and training in agriculture began in 1994 when he worked with esteemed Colorado farmer, David Lynch who remains a sought after authority on grass-based livestock and sustainable diversified farming. Matthew built upon this experience and has established himself as a successful and respected farmer who seeks to cultivate the community as much as the farmland.

Matthew has arrived on the FARM with a plan, “My short-term goal is to learn, assess, gather and evaluate both natural (soils, plants, etc.) and structural resources (buildings, fences, etc.) on the farm and island. This will determine how I can implement our long-term goal of developing a viable working farm that is sustainable and serves the educational, production and vision of the FARM Institute.” He is also eager to share, “Based on the saying, ‘There are no strangers in the garden.’ I look forward to building a network around the farm that will further strengthen our community by bonding us together.”

John Curelli, Executive Director of FARM says, "We are pleased to welcome Matthew as our new farm manager. His broad experience with agriculture and engaging hands-on teaching skills will strengthen our commitment to our Mission & the community."

In the year 2000, The FARM Institute was born out of a belief that just about everything a child needs to learn – values, work ethic, teamwork, commitment to community, caring for the land, even the “3-R’s” – are experienced on the FARM. After making its home at Herring Creek Farm in Edgartown for the last five years, The FARM Institute recently settled into their new home around the corner at Katama Farm. Once again workers toil away to breathe new life into a long dormant historical Vineyard farmland. Drop by to chat with new farm manager, Matthew, and see how things are progressing with the FARM.
