The Island Grown Initiative invites the public to sample local
food and listen to music of Maynard Silva during the launch of
its “Island Grown” buy local campaign.
This event, open to the public, will held at the down-island
Cronig’s Market on Saturday, June 10, from 1 to 3 p.m. (rain
or shine).
The afternoon festivities will include sampling of local oysters,
fresh farm greens and other local edibles, along with music and
an informational display of local Vineyard farms. Take home a free
map to farms and locations on the island where you can buy fresh
berries, heirloom tomatoes, baby salad greens, herbs, and other
farm fresh vegetables along with eggs, beef, lamb, pork, vinegars,
jams, and baked goods all summer long and throughout the year.
The goal of the “Island Grown” campaign is to identify
locally grown and harvested products and to educate consumers about
the benefits of buying local, which includes supporting local family
farms and preserving the future environment of the island.
“We have a sustainable agricultural reality here, and many
people don't realize that,” explains Ali Berlow, a founding
member of the Island Grown Initiative. “This island has its
own food sources - all grown, raised and fished right here.”
The group has designed a photographic display of island farms
and an “Island Grown” logo to help consumer easily identify
local produce sold at Cronig’s and other locations across
the island. T-shirts with the logo will be available.
“This is a way to help us all see and relate to products
that are farmed on this island. This step helps each of us in supporting
our farming community, reducing energy usage getting it to us and
actualizes a portion of our sustainability goals,” says Cronig’s
owner Steve Bernier, one of the primary sponsors of the local campaign.
Come help support your island growers and enjoy the afternoon.
The event is free of charge, although donations to help support
the work of the group will be accepted.
