APRIL 16, 2007

The FARM Institute has new Spring programs and now we provide transportation!

Edgartown, MA—The FARM Institute (TFI) is excited to announce "Springing into Spring" – 6 days of programs beginning Saturday April 7th on Katama Farm. There is always something to do on The FARM and this spring The FARM Institute is providing transportation. That’s right! Now your child can go straight from school to The FARM Institute. Transportation will be provided from one school per day (Monday through Thursday with the exception of the Edgartown school*). Parents/ guardians must pick up their child at The FARM at the end of the day’s program. The transportation schedule is as follows:

  • Charter School on Mondays
  • Tisbury School on Tuesdays
  • Oak Bluffs on Wednesdays
  • West Tisbury on Thursdays.

*Edgartown School will provide transportation to Katama Farm 5 days a week.

Programs are open to all island children, grades K – 8, Monday – Thursday.

What if your child has a conflict on the day bus transportation is arranged but he/she still wants to come to The FARM? No problem. You can still bring your child to The FARM any day: Monday through Thursday. All students are welcome.

Why more programs? Spring is the busiest time of year on The FARM and we want island kids to be a part of all the magic! There is digging to do in the garden. There are seeds to be sprouted and planted. Many of our animals give birth in spring time (goats, sheep, cows and pigs). We have brand new fiber center and so many crafts to share using our own sheep and goat wool! There are fences to be mended or moved! Chores to be done! Why not send your child to The FARM for an afternoon of adventure and discovery?

What about Friday and Saturday? Friday remains our Farmer’s-in-Training program. TFI’s longest running program FIT combines the dedication and the skill of our young farmers with the fun of after school programs. If your child is in grade 5 – 8 and has an interest in farming, gardening, working with animals or working with wood there is plenty to learn on The FARM. Call for more details on this.

Our Saturday program continues to be a success with Melinda DeFeo leading the charge. Saturday’s are a three hour program filled with fun, learning, and surprises. F.I.T. kids often take part in mentoring young farmers during our Saturday program. Open to all kids grades: K-8. Call for more details.

Spring is the busiest time on The FARM. Children can be found involved in all kinds of farm activities.

Teachers can also enjoy The FARM’s growing field trip program. Teachers can bring their classrooms along to the farm to learn about goats, sheep, knitting, felting, nutrition and more. Contact Melinda DeFeo for details.

Want to sign up? Great! Call The FARM Institute and ask for Nora Kennedy, Education Manager, 508.627-7007 ext. 104, or email . Please be sure to include your child’s name, age and what day(s) he/she plans on attending programs at The FARM.
