Read for Seeds Community Planting and Book Sale!
Book Sale: 4/23 – 4/29
Community Planting: 4/29
The FARM Institute invites you to participate in Read for Seeds,
an island wide community planting and book sale. Read for Seeds
was developed to raise money for our teaching garden and to support
efforts to bring fresh local food to The Island Food Pantry (IFP).
The book sale begins on Monday, April 23rd and culminates with
a community planting on Sunday, April 29th. Books will be sold
between 9 am and 5 pm in our horse barn. Those who wish to buy
a book and participate in planting may join us on Sunday, April
29, 12 – 2 pm. Everyone is invited to participate in this
island wide event. Proceeds from the book sale will support our
teaching and production gardens. We are inviting you to help us
plant seed potatoes. A portion of our potato crop will be donated
to the Island Food Pantry in the fall.
Read for Seeds was inspired by a read-a-thon (also called Read
for Seeds) led by Gaining Ground in Boston, a non-profit farm that
grows food for the hungry. Our goal was to involve children and
families in a hands-on agriculture project that would benefit the
island community of Martha’s Vineyard. Using The FARM as
medium for addressing local hunger issues, we visited 4 island
schools (Edgartown, Charter, Tisbury and Montessori) in the month
of March to discuss hunger and introduce students to growing food
for their community! These students collected hundreds of books
to support the Read for Seeds project. During the week of April
23rd (while the book sale is going on) these classes will visit
The FARM and plant seed potatoes. In the fall ‘07, participants
will be invited to return for a harvest celebration. Please join
us and help make this project a success!!
If you cannot make it down to The FARM and (or) prefer to make
a financial contribution to the project you may do so by sending
a check to The FARM Institute, 14 Aero Ave., Edgartown 02539 (Memo:
Read for Seeds).
Plant a potato! Buy a book! Help The FARM fight island hunger
one potato at a time!
The FARM Institute is a non profit organization whose mission
is to connect the community to the importance of local and sustainable
agriculture through the efforts of a diverse working farm.
