Pigs

For 2013 we have decided to take a break from raising pigs. But don't fear! Our freezer is full of all your favorite Farm Institute raised heritage breed pork. Our sows Mariah and Carey are enjoying this down time at The Grey Barn and Farm in Chilmark.
We have chosen Large Blacks and Berkshires for our pasture based operation. Both are very old breeds--Large Blacks are known for their excellent foraging ability, maternal qualities and very flavorful meat; Berkshires are known for their very flavorful meat, hardiness and good production in a pasture setting.
Our 2 sows will produce two litters every 15 months (A pigs gestation is about 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days) and all piglets are be raised out in our fields and rotated through our gardens.
Pigs take about 6 months to reach their ideal market weight of 250 pounds.
The pigs are all fed a vegetarian diet of grains locally milled at Ventura Grain in Taunton, MA using diets specially formulated for us and of course no shortage of vegetables! A happy pig is a good pig!
